Redefining Beauty: What is Sexy?

In the last week Tiwa Savage and Rihanna have given us a lot to talk about. Neither of them are strangers to criticism. Tiwa has received huge backlash for her choice of outfit in previous videos and Rihanna taunts us with daring outfits on every red carpet.

There seems to be an arbitrary line between risqué and sexy and although the intention of this article is not point out where that line should be, I do wonder what the impacts of these images has on the average woman.

The debate about the influence of the media in defining beauty, style and almost every aspect of our lives is not new, but I’d like to know the extent to which these debates are a reality to the average woman. I’m unsure if age is a major factor but I continually feel embarrassed about the length of dresses, skirts and snugness of outfits these days. Of course, each woman is free to decide the average length of her skirt, but what influences this decision?

Do images of Tiwa and Rihanna and a host of other celebrities around the world make us hike up the hem of our skirt a few inches so we feel sexier? Do we feel the need to show more than a hint of cleavage to gain the attention of the opposite sex? What influences your definition of sexy? Is sexy something all women should ascribe to be and who defines what that is? Or is sexy simply how we feel and completely unrelated to what we wear?

Let’s discuss!
