30 Things Every Girl Should Know by 30 (Part 1)

We stumbled on this list written by Wendelyn and we were compelled to share! The list is not only filled with truth but carries the true essence of femininity and a woman committed to living for AND on purpose. Please read, share but most importantly, imbibe! The concluding part will be published this week.

30.Trust yourself. Trust the choices you make and make them your minions; let them work for you. You don’t need everyone’s opinion; listen to yourself a little more.

29. Be kind to the people in your life. They put up with you and you know how you can be…

28. Stay thirsty for wisdom. But, assuage the thirst with discernment. Not every advice is a solution; know what to imbibe, know what to discard.

“Never take advice from someone with no investment in the outcome.”-Christiana

27. Find God for yourself. We don’t give our finances to our bosses to manage or our emotional health to our mums to control (can you imagine?!). We manage our funds and hearts yet leave our souls to questionable pastors, granny’s covering prayers and fervent pleas to the Creator ONLY when stopped by LASTMA. Your spiritual growth is in your hands; it is necessary, useful and certainly worth the effort to develop.

26. Understand yourself; identify your weaknesses, maximize your strengths. You must know yourself to own yourself. Ralph Waldo Emerson says, “We must be our own before we can be another’s”.

“Nemo Dat Quod Non Habet”.

Latin legal maxim meaning,

“You Cannot Give What You Do Not Have.”

25. Intelligence is sexy. Aged 13, my father told me,

There are two things a good man looks for in a woman, intelligence and independence.”

24. Continually restore to factory settings. Don’t allow yourself be configured by your experiences, or disillusioned by disappointment.

“The past is not meant to be used as a device of torture”.

23. Understand your worth; you matter, you matter, you matter. A lot.

22. Have a sense of humour, or life will laugh at you. Don’t take things too much to heart.

“Men are not against you; they are merely for themselves.”– Gene Fowler

21. Like other women! A lot of women seem to see each other as threats rather than allies. Once, another young lady attempting to subtly insult me inadvertently gave me one of the best backhanded compliments ever, to her chagrin. She said, “Wendy, you always get along with other women. ..because pretty women do not see you as a threat in the same way they see me.“ To which I quietly responded,

“Darkness repels, honey. Light attracts.”

20. Make decisions you can be proud of when you’re alone or, you may hate yourself. Think how UN-fun it is to walk around daily with a person you hate. -_-

19. Develop yourself constantly. Today, even cartoons reference literature classics and political phenomena! In the wise words of Destiny’s Child I ask,

“Can you keep up?!”

18. Dream big, strive hard…but live within your means.

“Not that I [Paul] was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.”-Philippians 4:11

17. When you find someone you know is worth it, invest. Ignore the microwave trend and put in the hardwork; invest time, effort…and vulnerability *gasps* Don’t play games, because securing your happiness is not a contact sport. Ignore the rules set by the Magazine gods and go for it 100%. If you win, you love. If you lose, you learn.

16. Own THAT little black dress. Every woman who can afford one, and it mustn’t be expensive, should invest in a black dress that hides and hugs as appropriate. Mine is a tiny spandex number that’s been reworked with blinged-out sandals and a chignon for formal dining, an oversized denim jacket and straw hat for garden parties, and a flimsy lace jumper for in-between nights, and no one ever seems to remember that it’s the same dress! It goes without saying that every woman must know the rudiments of Wardrobe Maximization. #QualityOverQuantity

15. Mind your business. If you’re busy tending to your business, two things are likely to happen. 1) You won’t have the time to prod and prune anyone else’s; 2) Your business will bloom.

“Not everyone asking deserves answers.”-Rob Hill Sr.
