Inspire Monday: You’re Worth Much More

Inspire Monday: You’re Worth Much More

We live in a world that is very visual and external. Even though quite a lot about us is intangible, like our thoughts, feelings, personality and even character traits; because, all these are housed in a body, many times, we placed a lot of focus and emphasis on the external packaging of that body. Sometimes, we do this, completely disregarding the more important parts that are not seen.

A friend of mine who recently bought a fancy new car remarked to me that he found it funny to observe how people treated him much differently when he drove up to places in it. Whereas, in his old Camry, he was barely given a glance even though he was the same person.

That’s the reality of the world we live in. We make judgments about people based on what they look like (video vixen-ish vs. girl-next-door), what clothes they wear (off-the-rack vs. couture), what cars they drive or where they reside (Island vs. Mainland)! Feel free to plead guilty at any point!

While this is understandable, you must realise that you will miss out on the best of people if you judge them by externalities alone.

The true treasures are found in the heart – in kindness, patience, consideration and the many fruits of a pleasant and favourable character. The truth is that bad character will make you lose sight of the beauty of even the most drop-dead gorgeous person.

If you’ve found yourself on the other end of the spectrum, where you’re being judged by the weave you wear (or don’t wear), and by whether you know the difference between Yves Saint Laurent and Primark(LOL…maybe you should!), just relax!

Of course, do your part to make sure that you are presentable and can hold your own in conversations with some knowledge of current affairs and happenings. But, be comforted in the fact that there is definitely more to you than the eyes can see and that your worth cannot be measured in any currency on the face of this earth. It is far wiser to invest in improving yourself intellectually and character-wise. The pay-off cannot be quantified.

This is just a quick reminder to you today – you matter and you have value that is inestimable. Don’t let anyone make you feel that you are what you wear or what you drive. Then most importantly, let this knowledge filter down to the way you let people treat you. Don’t stand for abusive or toxic relationships, or allow people talk to you in a demeaning way. You set the tone for how people treat you and it’s up to you to define the boundaries in your relationships.
