If you’re like me, November is one of your favourite months in the year. It’s a month that fills me with expectations– the dry air of harmattan signalling Christmas, parties and fun-filled festivities at every turn and the anticipation of a new year filled with new opportunities. November is a lovely month.
Still, I’ve found myself feeling a bit despondent because November means the year is really, really wrapping up. Despondency is real especially when I look at the really big hairy and audacious goals I had for the year but didn’t achieve. However, I’ve found that staying in this state is not very productive for me both in the short and long term.
If you also feel like that often, then I’ll share something that has helped me put things in perspective and get back on trap, happy and loving life. It’s simply counting your blessings.
Counting your blessings means intentionally taking note of all the good things that are present in your life. There are many positive things in our lives that we just take for granted. Your job or ability to earn a living, people who love and care for you, good food (I’m an unrepentant foodie! LOL), your health and life, your ability to reason and control your faculties are just a few of the many things to be thankful. The truth is, no matter what you think you lack, you have enough to be grateful!
The principle of attraction is very real – what you constantly feed your mind on will become your reality. The more you focus on the things you don’t have working for you, the less you will see of the things that are actually working in your favour.
It’s natural for the mind to want to dwell on and magnify negativity, so one of the practical ways you can harness the power of gratitude is by keeping a gratitude journal. Just as the name implies, a gratitude journal is a written record of things that you’re grateful for. If you love journals like I do, you can pick out a fancy one and dedicate it to this purpose.
Then, daily or as often as you want, put down the things in your life that would want to acknowledge as good and express gratitude for. After putting these down, I suggest that you dedicate sometime on a specific day of the week to verbal affirming, acknowledging and giving thanks for these good things you have and have received. As you do this, it’ll begin to dawn on you how blessed you are. You’ll find yourself being content, and happy; and happiness attracts more things to be happy about! It’s such a powerful tool!
Your mind is always working and because of the sort of world we live in, it’s easy to dwell on negativity. But, negativity only breeds more negativity. So, be intentional about counting your blessings. If you’re feeling crappy in the middle of the day, then it’s a good time to pause and say ‘I am so thankful I’m alive and healthy and that I have the capacity to deal with these difficult clients and turn them to raving fans of my business.’ With these words of gratitude, you will push your mind to begin to see positivity and find solutions.
So, dear reader, what are you grateful for today? Count your blessings and leave a comment!
