‘See as you dey do like woman’! ‘Woman driver’! ‘Why you dey cry like woman’……Somehow society has managed to insinuate that being a ‘girl’ is insulting. We reconstructed the twerm girl to mean fluffy, weak and ditzy. But girls aren’t born that way. As children we see the world as open, beautiful and filled with possibilities. We run, play, jump….we do everything until we are told, we shouldn’t. Until we are told, ‘girls don’t do that’ or because doing it like a girl isn’t how it should be done.
I love this video because it confronts this stereotype head on. It shows that women too are guilty of this double standard but more importantly, it shows us that being a girl is something of pride. I run, walk, jump, laugh, drive, write and speak like a girl because I am a girl. And in the words of Shonda Rhimes…..that also means I’m ‘bad a$$.
