5 Questions for Career Happiness

5 Questions for Career Happiness

I dread Mondays!  Last year as my summer vacation drew to a close, I actually felt emotional. The feeling took me back to my secondary school days and how depressed I felt at the thought of going back to boarding school for another term. Instinctively I knew the feeling wasn’t normal. How can a grown 30 something year old woman be moved to tears at the thought of returning back to work?!

It all made sense when I came across this article written by Laura Garnett of inc. According to her, Monday mornings can be a sad reminder that you aren’t maximizing your potential at work. She suggests that we ask ourselves these 5 questions as we begin our week to help us slow down, take stock of what we’re doing, and ensure that you are bringing all you’ve got to your weekly tasks. Not only will these questions challenge our mindset, they will also help double-check that we are focusing our efforts on work that is invigorating and energizing.

1. Am I excited to dive into the challenges that I have lined up for the week?
2. Am I looking forward to engaging with the people I am meeting or working with?
3. Am I going to my dream job?
4. Am I being compensated fairly for the value I bring to my job?
5. Do I feel energized, rested, and confident?

According to Laura, “if the answer to more than three of these questions is “no” on a consistent basis, then it’s a sign that you’re spending your time in ways that may not be serving you. While this may not be a problem in the short term, over time you will see that your energy wanes and your enthusiasm for work becomes nonexistent”.

I decided to ask myself this question every Monday for at least the next 4 weeks while at the same time ensuring that I am challenging myself continually at work. Who knows, the answers may require me to take some courageous actions in 2015!

How about you…do you have the Monday blues like me? What sorts of answers did you come up with to these questions?  Let me know!
